The Gift of Togetherness

With the possibility of colder weather approaching and holidays abounding, I find myself pulling in anything at arm’s length for a cuddle. This social time of year brings a lot of joy, but also more engagements, more commitments, more preparing and planning, which can be overwhelming… to say the least. With so many obligations pulling at our strings, we sometimes need a tether to keep us from floating away completely. Amidst the hustle and bustle is a good time to stop, take a deep breath, grab a hold of a loved one and just be together.

This grounding sense of and capacity for togetherness is what defines our humanity. Perhaps you take your child to a family yoga class and stop for a post-yoga snack at your favorite café. You could unroll your mats and practice some yoga together at home. You could play “Yogi Says” (Simon Says but with yoga poses), or simply sit seated criss cross, facing one another, hands touching to do some mirror stretching. You could take a trip to the dollar store and have your child pick out their favorite toy and then tape a dollar to it, or grab any and every baking ingredient in the pantry and create your own custom cookie.

Togetherness can be as simple as taking a walk hand in hand, or reading to each other from your favorite books. Togetherness can be scootching down to their end of the couch to share your blanket or the details of your day. It doesn’t matter what you do, as long as you can be together with someone you love. The gift of togetherness is certainly the best gift you could give or receive this holiday season.

What do you do to be together?
